Overview
Every breath inside your SEAL U passes through one pleated panel hidden behind the glovebox — and when it is clogged with a year of dust, pollen and traffic film, the air turns stale, the vents blow weak and the windows fog. This is the fix: a genuine MAHLE LAK 1756 activated carbon cabin filter, the original-equipment name in filtration, made for your car.
MAHLE is one of the world's largest original-equipment filter manufacturers, and the LAK 1756 is its activated carbon cabin filter for the BYD Song Plus EV family — the car sold in Europe as the SEAL U EV. The "LAK" line goes beyond a plain pollen screen: layered media traps the particles, and a bed of activated carbon adsorbs the exhaust fumes, odours and volatile compounds that a paper-only filter lets straight through. You are not buying an anonymous white box — the MAHLE retail box, part number and anti-counterfeit label are all in the photos.
Why SEAL U owners fit the MAHLE LAK 1756
- It cleans gases, not just dust — the activated carbon layer adsorbs traffic fumes, outside odours and VOCs on their way into the cabin. A standard pollen filter stops particles and passes smells; this one stops both, which is the difference you notice in tunnels, traffic queues and city driving.
- Fine-particle filtration for the air you actually breathe — the multi-layer media captures dust, pollen, soot and fine particulate matter before they reach the vents, so the air at face level is the cleanest air in the car.
- Strong airflow, properly restored — a clogged filter strangles the blower: weak vent output, slow demisting, a fan that sounds busy and achieves little. Fresh pleats restore full HVAC airflow, so the cabin heats, cools and demists at the speed it did when the car was new.
- Original-equipment quality, exact housing fit — the LAK 1756 is dimensioned for this filter housing and slides in as a direct replacement for BYD part SA2E-8121211E-E1 / 1303389100. The frame carries printed AIR FLOW direction arrows, so orientation takes one glance.
- A ten-minute job behind the glovebox — no workshop visit, no dashboard surgery. The filter housing sits behind the glove compartment, as shown in the installation photo, and the swap is a slide-out, slide-in.
How the LAK media works — layer by layer
- Primary layer: stops the coarse load — road dust, lint, leaves and hair — before it can bury the finer layers.
- Electrostatic fine layer: captures the small stuff, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and pollen, that a single coarse screen passes.
- Activated carbon layer: a bed of porous carbon with an enormous internal surface area that adsorbs gaseous pollutants — exhaust odours, fuel vapours and volatile organic compounds — instead of letting them into the cabin.
- Support layer: keeps the pleats rigid and evenly spaced, so airflow stays uniform and the media cannot collapse or bypass at the edges.
Exact fitment
Fitment Guide- Vehicle: BYD SEAL U EV (the European name for the Song Plus EV)
- Also fits, per the manufacturer's compatibility panel: BYD SEAL EV 2022–2024 · BYD Song Plus EV 2021–2024 · BYD Song Plus Pro 2019–2021
- Part number: MAHLE LAK 1756
- Replaces BYD OE: SA2E-8121211E-E1 / 1303389100
- Filter type: activated carbon cabin (pollen + odour) filter
- Quantity: 1 filter — the car takes a single panel
- Position: HVAC filter housing behind the glovebox
Changing it — about ten minutes
- Open the glovebox and empty it. Release the damper arm on the side and press in the glovebox side walls so the box drops down past its stops — the filter housing cover is directly behind it, as shown in the installation photo.
- Unclip the long housing cover and slide the old filter straight out. Look at what comes out: the grey-black load in the pleats is a year of everything you did not breathe.
- Note the AIR FLOW arrows printed on the old filter's frame, and slide the LAK 1756 in with its arrows pointing the same way — airflow direction is the one thing that must match.
- Refit the cover until it clicks, swing the glovebox back up, reconnect the damper, and run the fan through its speeds. The airflow difference over a clogged filter is immediate.
Specifications
- Brand / part: MAHLE LAK 1756, original equipment quality
- Media: multi-layer with activated carbon
- Function: dust, pollen and fine-particle filtration + odour and gas adsorption
- In the box: 1 × MAHLE LAK 1756 cabin air filter in MAHLE retail packaging with anti-counterfeit label
- Replacement interval: every 12 months or 12,000–15,000 miles (approx. 20,000 km). In dusty regions or heavy stop-start city traffic, change it at 7,500–10,000 miles — carbon saturates and pleats load faster there.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a genuine MAHLE filter?
Yes. You receive the LAK 1756 in its sealed MAHLE retail box, with MAHLE branding printed on the filter frame and the scratch-off anti-counterfeit label on the box — both visible in the photos. Scratch the label and check the code on arrival if you want belt-and-braces certainty.
What does the activated carbon actually do?
It adsorbs gases. Dust and pollen are particles and any decent filter traps them; exhaust fumes, fuel smells and volatile compounds are gases that pass through plain media. The carbon layer's porous structure captures those gas molecules on contact, which is why a carbon filter keeps tunnel and traffic smells out of the cabin while a paper-only filter does not.
How often should I change it?
Every 12 months or 12,000–15,000 miles is the standard interval for this filter. Shorten that to 7,500–10,000 miles if you drive mostly in dense city traffic, dusty or high-pollen conditions. The honest test is airflow: weak vents and slow demisting mean the panel is loaded, whatever the calendar says.
Where is the filter on my SEAL U, and can I change it myself?
Behind the glovebox, inside the HVAC housing — the installation photo shows the housing with the glovebox lowered. Lower the glovebox, unclip the cover, slide the old panel out and the new one in with the AIR FLOW arrows matched. Ten minutes, no workshop, nothing to disconnect.
Does it also fit the SEAL sedan?
Yes — the manufacturer's compatibility panel for the LAK 1756 covers the BYD SEAL EV 2022–2024 alongside the Song Plus EV 2021–2024 and Song Plus Pro 2019–2021. The SEAL U EV is the Song Plus EV under its European name, so one part number serves the family.
Will a fresh filter really change the air conditioning?
Yes, mechanically it has to. Every cubic metre of cooled or heated air passes through this panel. A loaded filter is a restriction the blower has to fight: output drops, demisting slows and the fan works harder for less. A fresh panel removes the restriction, and vent output and demist speed return to as-new.
Which way round does it go?
The frame is printed with AIR FLOW arrows. Fit it with the arrows pointing in the same direction as the arrows on the filter you removed — the housing only accepts the panel one way, and the arrows remove all doubt.
