Overview

Your SEALION 5 DM-i runs electric most of the time — but its 1.5L petrol engine still breathes air, circulates oil and comes due for servicing like any engine. This kit renews all three of its filters in a single service visit.

A plug-in hybrid fools owners into forgetting the engine side of the car. Then the first annual service arrives and three separate filters are suddenly on the invoice: the engine air filter, the cabin filter and the oil filter. This is all three in one box, matched to the SEALION 5 DM-i's 1.5L DM-i powertrain — order once, hand the kit to your workshop or fit the two tool-free elements yourself, and the filter side of the service is done for another year.

The three filters, one by one

  • Engine air filter — the pleated panel with the orange seal. This is the element your 1.5L engine breathes through. Deep paper pleats give a large filtration area, the molded orange sealing frame compresses against the airbox walls so no unfiltered air sneaks past the edges, and the angled front corner keys the element into the SEALION 5's airbox in exactly one orientation. A choked air filter strangles the engine every time the hybrid system calls on it — fuel consumption in petrol mode climbs and response dulls. A fresh element restores full, clean airflow.
  • Cabin filter — the grey activated-carbon element in the white frame. Every breath of air the climate system pushes into the cabin passes through this filter first, including the air feeding the SEALION 5's PM2.5 filtration. The grey media is activated-carbon loaded: it traps dust, pollen and road dirt in its pleats and absorbs exhaust fumes and outside odors instead of blowing them at your face. When the A/C starts to smell musty and the fan feels weaker than it used to, this is the part that has saturated — a new carbon element is the fix, not an air freshener.
  • Oil filter — the black spin-on canister. A steel spin-on cartridge with a threaded center port and perimeter inlet holes, sized for the 1.5L engine's oil circuit. It screens the engine oil continuously between changes, catching the wear particles and combustion deposits that a hard-working hybrid engine produces across thousands of start-stop cycles. It is renewed together with the engine oil at every oil service — reusing an old filter with fresh oil defeats the point of the oil change.

When each filter comes due

  • Engine oil + oil filter: every 12 months or 15,000 km — the interval in BYD's own SEAL 5 owner's manual maintenance table.
  • Engine air filter: first renewal at 18 months or 13,500 km, then every 24 months or 20,000 km, per the same manual table — sooner in dusty conditions.
  • Cabin filter: every 12 months or 20,000 km in BYD's DM-i service rhythm — and straight away whenever the A/C smells stale or airflow drops.
  • This kit's rhythm: the packaging's own guidance is replacement every 10,000–15,000 km. One kit per annual service keeps all three filters ahead of their schedules instead of chasing them one at a time.

Exact fitment

Fitment Guide
  • Vehicle: BYD SEALION 5 DM-i
  • Powertrain: 1.5L DM-i plug-in hybrid (petrol-electric) — this kit serves the petrol engine and cabin systems
  • Contents: 1 × engine air filter, 1 × activated-carbon cabin filter, 1 × spin-on oil filter
  • Same filter family (printed on the kit's own compatibility panel): BYD Han L DM-i 1.5T PHEV 2025+, Song L DM-i 1.5L PHEV 2024–2025, Song Pro DM-i (2nd Gen) 1.5L PHEV 2024–2025, Sealion 05 DM-i 1.5L PHEV 2024–2025, Sealion 06 DM-i 1.5L PHEV 2025+, Sealion 07 DM-i 1.5T PHEV 2024–2025
  • Not for: battery-electric BYD models — a pure EV has no engine air filter and no oil filter to renew

Renewing the filters

  1. Air filter (minutes, no tools beyond the airbox clips): open the bonnet, unclip the airbox lid, lift the old panel out, drop the new element in with the seal seated flat all the way around, and re-clip the lid.
  2. Cabin filter (minutes, behind the glovebox): lower the glovebox, slide the HVAC filter cover off, pull the old element out, slide the new carbon element in in the same orientation, and refit the cover and glovebox.
  3. Oil filter (at the oil change): with the old oil drained, spin the old canister off, smear a film of fresh oil on the new filter's seal ring, spin the new filter on hand-tight, and refill with fresh engine oil.

Frequently asked questions

My SEALION 5 runs on electricity most of the time. Does it really need engine filters?
Yes. The DM-i system starts the 1.5L engine whenever you accelerate hard, climb, cruise at motorway speed or run the battery low — and engine oil ages by time as well as mileage, which is why BYD's manual schedules oil and filter renewal every 12 months regardless of how the kilometres were driven. The engine side of a hybrid works in short, frequent bursts, which is harder on oil and filters per kilometre than steady conventional driving.

Why buy all three filters as one kit?
Because they come due in the same service window. The oil filter changes with every oil change, the cabin filter is an annual item, and the air filter falls due on the same workshop rhythm — one kit means one order and one visit covers the complete filter side of the service, with nothing forgotten and no separate postage on three small parcels.

Is the cabin filter a plain dust filter?
No — the media is grey because it is activated-carbon loaded. A plain paper element only strains particles; the carbon layer also absorbs exhaust fumes, fuel smells and outside odors before the air reaches the cabin, on top of trapping the dust and pollen that feed the car's PM2.5 filtration.

How do I know my filters are due?
The clear signs are a musty smell from the vents, weaker fan airflow, the A/C taking longer to cool the cabin, and the engine side of the hybrid system feeling less eager with higher petrol consumption. If the car is approaching 12 months or 15,000 km since its last service, the filters are due by schedule whether or not symptoms have appeared.

Does this kit fit the Sealion 05 DM-i and Song Pro DM-i too?
Yes — the kit's own compatibility panel lists the shared 1.5L DM-i filter family: Han L DM-i 1.5T (2025+), Song L DM-i 1.5L (2024–2025), Song Pro DM-i 2nd Gen 1.5L (2024–2025), Sealion 05 DM-i 1.5L (2024–2025), Sealion 06 DM-i 1.5L (2025+) and Sealion 07 DM-i 1.5T (2024–2025). The SEALION 5 DM-i is the export-market model in this same family, and this listing is the SEALION 5 DM-i kit.

Can I fit the kit myself?
The air filter and cabin filter are straightforward swap-in elements — airbox clips and a glovebox-side cover, a few minutes each with no special tools. The oil filter is renewed as part of the engine oil change: if you change your own oil, the spin-on canister is part of that same job.

Is engine oil included?
No. The kit contains the three filters only. Engine oil to your car's specification is a separate purchase at service time.
