Overview

Untethered public AC chargers — the post at the supermarket, the office car park, the hotel wallbox — have a socket, not a cable. No cable in your boot means no charge. This Type 2 to Type 2 lead is the one that lives in the boot and works everywhere: six ratings, every one spelled out below so you buy the exact cable your BYD can use.

Both ends are Type 2 (IEC 62196) connectors with the full seven-contact layout — L1, L2, L3, N and PE power contacts plus the CP and PP signal contacts that let the car and the charger negotiate a safe charging rate before any power flows. White ergonomic handles, tethered dust caps on both plugs, and multi-strand copper cores sized to the rating: 13 mm cable on the 16A leads, a heavier 16.5 mm on the 32A leads.

The six options — choose by your car's onboard charger

Your charging speed is set by the slowest of three things: the charge point, this cable, and your car's onboard charger. Match the cable to the car and the cable is never the bottleneck.

  • 16A · 5 m · Single Phase · 3.5 kW ($89.99) — the light, easy-handling lead for cars with a 3.5–3.7 kW onboard charger and for gentle overnight top-ups. The thinnest, most flexible cable in the range.
  • 16A · 5 m · Three Phase · 11 kW ($119.99) — three-phase 11 kW for cars with an 11 kW onboard charger on a 16A three-phase supply. Also runs single-phase at 3.5 kW, so it works on every Type 2 post.
  • 16A · 10 m · Single Phase · 3.5 kW ($129.99) — the 10 m reach version of the 3.5 kW lead, for charge points you cannot park right next to.
  • 32A · 5 m · Single Phase · 7 kW ($119.99) — the BYD home-charging standard. ATTO 3 and DOLPHIN charge at up to 7 kW single-phase, and this is their cable: full speed on a 32A home wallbox or public post, in the handiest 5 m length.
  • 32A · 5 m · Three Phase · 22 kW ($149.99) — the maximum-rate AC lead. On a 32A three-phase post it delivers 11 kW to three-phase BYD models such as SEAL and SEALION, up to 22 kW to any car that accepts it, and a full 7 kW on single-phase posts. One cable, every post, full speed — this is the future-proof choice.
  • 32A · 10 m · Single Phase · 7 kW ($159.99) — full 7 kW with 10 m of reach: driveways where the wallbox is on the far wall, shared posts, and nose-in parking where the charge port ends up at the wrong end of the car.

Why this cable

  • Full seven-contact Type 2 ends — the pin face is photographed and labelled in the gallery: L1/L2/L3 three-phase power contacts on the three-phase leads, N, PE, and the CP/PP signal pair that handles the Mode 3 handshake and cable-capacity signalling.
  • Copper cores sized to the rating — the cutaway photo shows the multi-strand copper conductor bundle. 32A leads run a 16.5 mm overall cable diameter; 16A leads 13 mm. No undersized cores, no warm cables at full rate.
  • Tethered dust caps on both ends — each plug's cap hangs on its own strap, so it is never lost in the boot, and the contact faces stay clean and dry between charges. Clean contacts charge reliably; gritty ones are the usual cause of a charge that will not start.
  • Handles shaped for gloved, one-handed use — deep grip ridges, a strain-relief collar where the cable meets the handle, and a plug body that seats with a positive push. Station plug insertion depth 4.4 cm, vehicle plug 3.4 cm, as dimensioned in the gallery.
  • Built for outdoor posts — sealed connector faces shrug off rain at exposed public chargers, and the cable stays flexible for coiling in cold weather.

Using it

  1. Take the cable out and uncoil it in wide loops — no kinks, no tight bends behind the plugs.
  2. Push the station plug into the charge point socket until it locks, then push the vehicle plug into your BYD's Type 2 inlet until it locks.
  3. Start the charge from the post or its app. The car and post agree the rate between themselves, up to the rating of the cable you chose.
  4. When you finish, end the session, unlock, and pull the vehicle plug first, then the station plug. Refit both dust caps before the cable goes back in the boot.

Frequently asked questions

My BYD charges at 7 kW. Which cable do I buy?
A 32A single-phase cable — the 5 m at $119.99 for home and public use, or the 10 m at $159.99 when the post is not beside the car. ATTO 3 and DOLPHIN take up to 7 kW AC, and a 16A cable would halve your speed to 3.5 kW.

Is the 22 kW three-phase cable worth it for a BYD?
Yes if your car has a three-phase onboard charger — SEAL and SEALION models charge at 11 kW on three-phase posts with this cable, against 7 kW single-phase. It also delivers the full 7 kW on single-phase posts and the full 22 kW to any future car that accepts it, so it is the one cable that covers every post you will ever use.

Does a three-phase cable work on a single-phase charger?
Yes. The three-phase leads carry all phases and run single-phase at their single-phase rate (7 kW for the 32A, 3.5 kW for the 16A) on any single-phase post, and full rate on three-phase posts. A single-phase cable on a three-phase post is the combination that limits you — it can only ever deliver single-phase power.

Do I need my own cable at public chargers?
At untethered AC posts, yes — the post provides a Type 2 socket and the cable is yours to bring. That covers most workplace, supermarket, hotel and on-street AC charging. DC rapid chargers always have their own tethered cable, so this lead is for AC charging at home and in public.

5 m or 10 m?
5 m covers a wallbox beside the parking space and most public posts. Choose 10 m when the charge point sits at the far end of a driveway, when you charge nose-in with the port at the back of the car, or when one post serves two spaces. A longer cable loses no charging speed — every lead is rated for its full current along its whole length.

How do I store it so it lasts?
Coil it in wide, relaxed loops — never wound tight around your forearm, which hard-bends the cable right behind the plugs where cables fail first. Refit both dust caps, and keep it in a closed case: our EV charging cable storage cases in this collection are sized exactly for 5 m, 10 m and longer leads.

Will it work with non-BYD cars?
Yes. Type 2 is the standard AC inlet across Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand — this cable charges any Type 2 vehicle at the rate that vehicle, post and cable rating allow.
